What Westmar does

Comprehensive condition surveys for sailing and motor yachts — hull integrity, moisture, structure, propulsion, electrical installations and rigging. Findings ranked by urgency and reported plainly, in any of four languages.
Surveys
Independent oversight through refits, yard periods and technical projects — scope review, workmanship checks, progress reporting and post-works inspection. Also representation at ownership level: corporate liaison, budgets and governance.
Owner representation
Operational responsibility for the yacht — crew coordination, technical supervision and maintenance planning, budget control, flag and class compliance, insurance and berthing — supported wherever in the world the yacht is.
Yacht managementHow a survey runs
The vessel comes out of the water beforehand, with enough time ashore for the hull to dry — how long depends on the weather — so that moisture readings mean something. Hull, keel and keel attachment, rudder, through-hulls, stern gear and propellers are inspected first.
Once launched, the survey moves to structure, machinery, electrical and plumbing systems, the rig and deck hardware — with systems tested under power. The engine must not have been run beforehand: a cold start shows what a warm one hides.
The sea trial: engine performance under load, temperatures and cooling, handling and steering response, and the behaviour that only shows itself once the boat is moving and every system is running at once.
Findings are ranked by urgency and written to be understood — what must be addressed before use, what should be planned, and what is simply noted. Two to four working days, in any of four languages.

Where and in what language
Surveys, viewings and project attendance are carried out in person, so they are Europe-based: across the Balearics and mainland Spain, and regularly in France, Germany and Belgium. Yacht management is coordinated remotely and supported wherever the vessel is. Reports are written in English, Spanish, French or German.
We used Thomas for the survey and sea trial on our Hanse 455 and could not recommend him highly enough. From start to finish it felt like being in expert hands.

Common questions
A full day on site is typical, longer for larger or more complex vessels. Sailing yachts are €28 per foot LOA, motor yachts €26, with a €900 minimum — a 40ft sailing yacht is from €1,120. Full pricing is on the fees page.
A haul-out is strongly recommended, with time ashore beforehand for the hull to dry. Keel attachment, through-hulls, rudder bearings and stern gear cannot be properly assessed afloat, and a wet hull makes moisture readings close to meaningless.
It is described accurately, with context on the likely cause and the cost implication, and ranked against everything else found. Most findings are manageable. The ones that are not are stated plainly, so the decision is yours to make on real information.
None. No referral fees are taken and none are paid. The report goes to you, and there is no interest in whether the sale completes.
