Sea trial — FAQ
What is the purpose of a sea trial attendance?
A sea trial is the only opportunity to assess the vessel under real operating conditions — how the engine performs under load, how the boat handles, how systems behave when everything is running at once, and whether there are any noises, vibrations or characteristics that only appear when the boat is moving. Independent observation matters when the trial would otherwise be run by the seller or broker alone.
How long does a sea trial typically take?
Usually two to three hours, depending on vessel size and what needs to be assessed. The focus is systematic observation of engine performance, steering and system operation rather than extended sailing. Sailing yachts include time under sail when conditions permit.
Is a sea trial included in a pre-purchase survey?
Yes — sea trial attendance is included as standard in a full pre-purchase survey, and findings are integrated into the survey report.
What if a sea trial wasn't possible at the time of survey?
Storage, weather or timing can rule one out on the day. A standalone sea trial can be arranged separately, with an independent written report.
What are you actually looking for during a sea trial?
Engine start behaviour and warm-up, oil pressure and temperature under load, cooling system performance, propulsion and manoeuvrability, steering response and feel, sail handling systems on sailing yachts, and general noise or vibration characteristics that can indicate mechanical concerns.
Can a sea trial be arranged for a vessel I already own?
Yes. Beyond purchase assessments, trials are useful after engine work or repairs, or to verify general operational performance.
